The knowledge test (often called the permit test or written test) is the first real hurdle on the way to a Washington license. The driver guide is long, some questions are worded to trip you up, and studying alone gets old fast. We help you focus on what actually shows up.
What is the Washington knowledge test?
It's a multiple-choice test based on the official Washington Driver Guide published by the DOL. You need it to get an instruction permit or, as an adult, as part of getting your license.
How many questions, and what's a passing score?
The test has 25 questions, and you need at least 20 correct (80%) to pass.
Is it available in other languages?
Yes. The knowledge test is offered in Spanish and several other languages.
Where do I take it?
You take the official test with a DOL-authorized testing provider. Renton Ruta Segura does not administer official tests. We prepare you to pass and show you how to find and book an authorized location.
What's on the test?
- Road signs: shapes, colors and meanings
- Right-of-way: intersections, roundabouts, pedestrians, emergency vehicles
- Speed limits and following distance
- Parking rules: hills, hydrants, crosswalks, corners
- Alcohol, drugs and driving: legal limits and penalties
