What does the Washington driving test check?

The examiner is watching for safe, legal, controlled driving. You'll be asked to perform specific maneuvers and drive in normal traffic.

Skills you'll be scored on

  • Pre-drive check: lights, signals, brakes, mirrors, seat belt
  • Smooth starts and complete stops
  • Observation: mirrors and blind spots before every lane change and turn
  • Signaling early enough
  • Speed control for posted limits and conditions
  • Following distance
  • Turns and intersections: lane position, right-of-way, full stops
  • Backing straight and under control
  • Parking, including on a hill

Mistakes that cause an automatic fail

These typically end or fail the test on the spot:

  • Rolling through a stop sign or red light
  • Failing to yield to pedestrians or vehicles
  • Any dangerous action that makes the examiner intervene
  • Clearly speeding
  • Hitting the curb or an object
  • Disobeying a traffic sign or instruction
